Original oil painting on deep edged canvas

‘Where the Brown Bears Roam’ is an original oil painting inspired by the brown bears of Alaska, a place in the northwest corner of North America, where summers are cool and cloudy, and the winters are long and cold. The bears gather at the water’s edge to catch salmon from a nearby lake.  They paddle in the shallows, catching the slippery fish in their claws.  The spawning salmon are crimson red and green, and the bears like to pluck them from the water and catch them as they jump through the air on their journey up stream.

Where the Brown Bears Roam

In a place called Anchorage,

where the brown bears roam,

sockeye salmon fly red/green,

in the crystal water’s foam.

Brown bears, congregating,

at the waters flowing height,

to catch the spawning fishes

and to take a tasty bite.

In a place called Anchorage,

where the salt beaches shimmer,

The tree-lined mountains, catch,

the last of the summer’s glimmer,

Where day is night and night is day,

the brown bear sleeps all winter,

with tiny bear cubs in cosy dens,

made up of crispy leaf-litter.

In a place called Anchorage,

where ferocious wolverines hunt.

The hares have snowshoe feet,

and the ugly moose’s grunt.

The caribous click like castanets,

as a white wolf howls at the moon,

dreaming of tiny wolf cubs

hoping to bring dinner home, soon.

In a place called Anchorage,

not far from the polar bears’ domain,

Where glaciers make oceans,

and icebergs see too much rain.

Where red fox jumps into snow,

In the white, wintery escape,

Hunting artic, white foxes,

Who try to escape their fate.

In a place called Anchorage,

Where young bears rear their young,

a male bear seeks solitude,

looking for grubs with his tongue.

Where the hunter takes a gun,

in search of fun and the chase,

to mount a bear-head on a plaque,

where it takes pride of place.

In a place called Anchorage,

where the brown bears roam,

The beavers build woody lodges,

as the bald eagles, circle for home.

The snowy, polar owlets

Nested on mounds of snowy tundra,

Eating the rodent lemmings,

in the cold, arctic summer.

In a place called Anchorage,

where the brown bears slumber,

The bison and muskox forage,

as Elks increase their number.

The large-pawed, Lynx Cat,

coated in blankets of snow,

his black, upright ear-tufts,

stand up in thirty degrees below.

In a place called Anchorage,

where the brown bears roam,

Children play fantastical games,

in the shelter of cosy homes.

Dressing up in bear suits,

reading teddy-bear tales,

adventures in a land of bears,

where courage never fails.
