Storm Clouds Gathering

As storm clouds gather,

the polar bear frowns,

A white bear of the Arctic,

weighing seventeen hundred pounds,

Looking at the massing clouds,

gathered to the north,

Worried for his future,

as he stares back and forth.

How could such a bear,

be threatened by climate change?

His plight endangered by shrinking,

decreasing range.

Winter rainfall destroying,

eroding the sea of ice.

The bear’s population,

an ecosystem sacrificed.

So how can this happen,

and who is to blame?

Emissions from pollutant gases,

coal, oil, and acid rain.

Fossil fuels burn electricity,

to feed our appetite for cars.

Oil and gas exploration,

drilling, threatens their calves.

The Arctic is warming,

killing the bear’s main prey.

Seals and walruses need ice,

to raise their young, each day,

Melting, fragmenting seas,

across the Arctic floor.

Forcing pregnant females,

to build dens on distant shores.

Bears depend on icy seas,

to help them stay alive.

But the rapid loss of Arctic ice,

is stopping them survive,

causing vulnerable bears,

to starve and to die,

At risk, threatened by extinction,

the truth is not a lie.

The polar bear stares,

far into space.

Worried for his bear cubs,

no solace in this place.

Can we save the bears,

and their precious habitat?

Let’s appeal to the politicians,

and influential bureaucrats.
