‘Woodpecker Window’ is a small intricate painting of this medium sized bird with complex wing, boldly-patterned, with a chisel-like-bill to drill holes in tree bark. The complex backdrop of the window frame and broken glass window in turquoise tones, makes it a modern interesting piece. I like to place birds against different complementary backdrops, unusual in that you would not see a woodpecker drilling holes in window frames. You can imagine the headache the bird would get as a result of its hammering blows it makes with its beak but their skulls are cushioned by a matrix of minute pockets of air, supported by strengthened bone tissue giving them a natural shock-absorber. The reason woodpeckers peck holes in dead wood is to disturb the insects they eat. I don’t think this one would find much to eat in a window frame though! The painting needs to be seen to be properly appreciated.
