This is a delightful study of a male superb fairywren of Australia, with its beautiful blue head, painted in oils on a thick edged rectangular canvas, with a backdrop of an old wooden door with decorative fixings. Painted in complementary grey and blue tones, setting the soft feathered bird against a hard wood background makes for an interesting and complex composition.
These gorgeous little birds, with their bright colours and quirky personalities, are beloved in Australia, where they are found across the south-east in shrubby habitat. Apparently male fairy-wrens sing to their eggs and their chicks are born recognising their parent’s unique song.
The painting looks lovely as part of a set (see other examples in the series) on a gallery wall or as an individual piece in a prominent corner.
