March brings ‘Spring Lambs”, frolicking in fields, nudging ferociously at their mother’s milk, tentatively saying hello to those who venture near inquisitively and offer a handful of green grass from the verges their mother’s cannot reach. A month of change, every season in one day, basking in sunshine, freezing sheets of sleet and rain. A season for nesting birds, mating animals, budding trees, flowers, and growth. Calving really gets underway throughout March and lambing too. It is one of the busiest times of year for many farmers. The ewes and lambs often need round-the-clock attention, so farmers have many sleepless nights for a couple of months. My delight at seeing the new lambs is always exciting.
