May brings ‘Herdy Lake District sheep’. This delightful breed of sheep is one of the most beautiful, with their pretty faces and shaggy dense mottled coloured coats to survive the cold in the Lake District fells. They roam all over the fells and are a delight to come across while exploring the area.  This one makes a handsome display for my sketchbook.  May blossom is everywhere in pastel shades, their fragrance fills the air. Hazel leaves show a bright green beauty swaying in the breeze. Cow Parsley flourishes amongst the verges. Mayflies dance and pretty bats make crazy sporadic flights in the darkness.  Robins and Blue-tits abound in the trees, chirruping their beautiful voices at dawn to dusk.  In May, the livestock keep the grass under control on the hillside. The lambs have their tails cut, to stop flies laying eggs in their wool and producing maggots and they have their ears notched and tagged. The sheep are daubed with bright coloured paint to distinguish them.
